Sand Tray Therapy

Neuroscience and Satir in the Sand Tray (NSST)
Sometimes our experiences are difficult to put into words. Neuroscience and Satir in the Sand Tray (NSST) is a therapeutic approach in which miniatures are selected, placed, and explored in the sand tray giving symbolic expression to stored implicit experiences. This approach helps clients explore and express experiences that may be difficult to access through conversation alone.
Grounded in neuroscience, attachment, and the Satir Model, NSST places a strong emphasis on safety and therapeutic attunement. As clients process experiences in the sand they can begin to give shape and meaning to emotions, relationships, and patterns that may have been held implicitly or outside of conscious awareness.
The sand tray provides a safe, external space where difficult experiences can be explored through metaphor, without having to retell or explain everything directly. This process can support greater self-understanding, emotional regulation, and new ways of seeing oneself, one’s relationships, and one’s experiences.
NSST can be helpful for children and teens, but it is not limited to younger clients. Adults can also find that NSST offers a meaningful way to explore what words sometimes cannot fully capture.
You don’t need to know exactly what to say or where to begin. This therapeutic sand tray approach offers another way to explore, express, and make sense of your story.
